Akpabio's classic in NNL: Plateau derby ends in stalemate

Sunday's Plateau derby between JUTH FC and Plateau United at the Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos, ended in a stalemate in the first half with United up by a goal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two Jos city clubs wanted the maximum points in the Week 26 National League Division A tie to consolidate their promotion bids to the elite Premier League next season.

Plateau United drew the first blood 10 minutes into the game when George Akpabio's powerful shot beat JUTH's goalkeeper Fidelis Eze.

They pressed home their advantage but the JUTH boys defended stoutly to ensure they did not concede more goals.

Events took a turn for the worse for Plateau United when centre referee Muhammad Babagana gave marching orders to Abdullahi Shehu. Their coaching crew and supporters were incensed and protested the decision.

Play continued amidst the protest. Babagana further angered the Plateau boys when he issued yellow cards to Plateau United's Ayinde Kabiru and Ibrahim Jibrin in the 43rd minute.

The stalemate finally occurred when Plateau United conceded a corner and just before it was taken the referee instead, pointed to the penalty spot.

Players of Plateau United protested the decision, but the referee stood his ground.
Although players of Plateau United did not leave the pitch, they moved from their half of the field.

Security personnel came into the field to provide security for the match officials, taking them out of the stadium.

A meeting was held between the referees, Match Commissioner and the security men, where the referees told the security personnel they could not continue with the game.
