Nigeria Premier League side, Plateau United got their top scorer, George Akpabio for nothing, but will reap the fruits of their labour for developing him into a top rated player.

Akpabio lands number five

Former Plateau United star, George Akpabio, will wear jersey number five at his new South African side, Ajax Cape Town.

Ajax Cape Town is proud to announce that the club have signed George Akpabio.

Akpabio previously played for Plateau United in the Nigeria National
League, the striker challenged amongst leading goal scorers with 18
goals in his first season (2010/2011) in the Nigerian Premier league.

George attracted the interest of a Norwegian club Viking Stavanger,
however Plateau United refused to release him after his trial with the
club in August 2011. He also attracted the interest of another
Norwegian club Lillestrom, however Plateau United recalled the player.

George arrived at Ikamva in the second week of January 2012 and he has
been part of the PSL training squad ever since. He was part of the
Ajax squad that attended the high altitude camp in Johannesburg last
week.

According to Supersport.com Football Nigeria; George Akpabio’s
performances in the lower division earned him a place in
SuperSport.com’s ‘10 to watch in NPL this season.’ Akpabio has
justified SuperSport.com’s pre-season rating.

The report published on the eve of the season noted: “Youngster George
Akpabio is arguably the most interesting player at Plateau United.

Akpabio is a strong player who has the ability to shoot with
precision. He also has the qualities of good positioning and the
ability to dribble.

“The striker was groomed through the youth ranks of Plateau United
before he was elevated to seniors of the club. Akpabio is one of the
reasons Plateau United have found themselves back in the top-flight
after six years in the lower league.”
