Plateau United top scorer, George Akpabio, has expressed readiness to compete for the Golden Boot award in the Nigeria Premier League this term.

Akpabio, who has scored seven goals in the top flight is three goals behind NPL joint top scorers, Kabiru Sanusi and Ibrahim Ajani, who have 10 goals each.

Apart from Sanusi and Ajani, Akpabio is aware of the fact that he has other contenders like Brenden Ogbu (Enugu Rangers), Victor Barnabas (Enyimba), Chigozie Christopher (Dolphins) and Super Eagles forward, Ekigho Ehiosun (Warri Wolves), who are also in the race.

The NPL resumes on Wednesday and Plateau United fans expect Akpabio to be at his beat when Zamfara United visit the club.

“The race for the Golden Boot is still open. All I need is some consistency and I’ll increase my goals haul. It’s sad that my team is at the wrong end of the table, but I know that my goals can change the situation.

“I’m working on my finishing to boost goalscoring for my team. Zamfara United have come to Jos at the wrong time,” he said on his personal blog, georgeakpabio.blogspot.com on Tuesday.

Interestingly, Akpabio scored against Zamfara United when both sides played a 2-2 draw in the first round of the league.

He attributed his performance during road trips as an indication of the quality of his team.

“I think the fact that I’ve scored more goals on the road is a sign of the quality of Plateau United. We have a good team and I believe things will change,” said the forward.

Akpabio’s form has since attracted Kwara United’s legendary gaffer Kadiri Ikhana, who made a serious bid for the attacker during the mid-season break, but the move was heavily resisted by Plateau United boss, Bitrus Bewerang.

The former student of St. Murumba College, Jos, is one of the most consistent scorers in the second round with three goals in four matches.
