Vasco da Gama’s on-loan striker George Akpabio has been on the receiving end of praise by Ajax Cape Town’s CEO George Comitis, admitting he is happy with his goal scoring form.

Successive goals against Santos and Mbombela United in the Nedbank Cup and a strike in the 2-1 League win over Roses United on Sunday afternoon have seen the Nigerian hit fine form.

Akpabio made the loan switch from Ajax at the beginning of the season and his form has not gone unnoticed by Vasco’s neighbours.

“I am very, very happy about it because when he came here, he came with the reputation of having scored 17 goals in Nigeria. When he came he started off well and then he couldn’t make it, he had that injury,” says Comitis.

“We were stuck with an extra foreigner here so I told him: ‘Go there, prove to us you are good enough to be back here, score goals and you will be back at preseason’. I am very happy to be seeing that [he is scoring].

“Is he proving himself? Well, if he is scoring goals he is. We are watching him all the time; we are watching a couple of our players [who are on loan].”

Nathan Gertse, Kyle Peters, Andre Petim and Sici Shelembe are all on loan from Ajax Cape Town.
