Akpabio tops NPL goals chart

Europe bound Plateau United forward, George Akpabio moved to the top
of the Nigeria Premier League goals chart on match day 33 after
scoring a brace against Warri Wolves.

The forward will remain as top scorer with 14 goals in the Nigeria
Premier League until the league resumes in August after the group
stage of the 2011 Federation Cup (formerly called Coca-Cola FA Cup.)

Akpabio had 12 goals before Saturday’s 2-0 victory in front of an
appreciative home crowd.

Plateau got an early lead when Akpabio converted a 6th minute penalty
and increased his tally with a wonderful goal 22 minutes later.

Akpabio’s impressive performance this term has vindicated his
pres-season rating by SuperSport.com.

Warri Wolves official, Timi Ebikagboro said Akpabio’s second goal can
win the ‘Goal of the season’ award.

“It was a goal with class. There was a lift from the mid-field to him
inside the Wolves vital area and he slammed it in with his first
touch,” he said to SuperSport.com.

Akpabio is now three goals short of the 17 goals mark scored by
Akarandut Orok as well as Eugene Salami and four goals short of Ahmed
Musa’s All-Time record of 18.

The duo of Sunshine Stars’ Ibrahim Ajani and Kaduna United’s Jude
Aneke remain on 12 goals because they were on duty for the clubs in
the Caf Confederations Cup.

It will be turn of Enyimba’s Victor Barnabas, who has scored 11 goals
to represent his team in the continent on Sunday.

Kwara United’s 10-goal hero, Kabiru Sanusi fired blanks in his team’s
0-1 loss at 3SC.

Niger Tornadoes forward, Sibi Gwar, will take his search for goals to
Enugu Rangers on Sunday. Gwar has also scored 10 goals.
